He is often associated with the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which created the Islamic Republic. Rouhani was prime minister at the time.
Previously, Rouhani was speaker of the Iranian parliament between 2005 and 2013.
Born in 1948, Rouhani is the nephew of one of the seven Supreme Leaders of the revolution.
First elected president of Iran in 2013, Rouhani is the first Iranian president to serve a second term.
Rouhani’s role in the nuclear deal, which was agreed with world powers in 2015, has been criticized by hardliners.
Rouhani has also come under fire after an agreement between Iran and the international community to end the war in Yemen that was sponsored by regional rival Saudi Arabia.
Rouhani has a strongly liberal outlook.
In a magazine article in 2008, Rouhani said a woman should be a “character for all men.”
“She should be clean and handsome. She should be smart and her personality should be strong,” he said.
